Bloomington, IN - Mayor Mark Kruzan announced today that he invites area youth, ages 18 and under, to participate in a city-wide art competition. The competition is designed to help celebrate April as "Be Beautiful Bloomington," part of the new monthly "Be Bloomington" community character campaign Kruzan announced yesterday.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for students to express themselves and get involved with the community," Kruzan said. "We hope this art competition increases awareness of Bloomington's attributes and recognizes the talents of our young citizens and future leaders."

The artwork should convey April's theme, "Be Beautiful Bloomington." Students are asked to submit any form of creative expression, which may include but is not limited to drawing, painting, coloring, graphic design, writing poetry or taking photographs of what they find to be beautiful in or about Bloomington.

The guidelines for artwork submission are as follows:

  • The artwork must express some characteristic or element of Bloomington that the youth finds beautiful.
  • A brief description of why the student chose this subject and what he or she finds beautiful about it must be attached to the entry. Descriptions should be no more than 50 words. Students must include their name, age, address, phone number, school and grade level with the description.
  • Students may use pencil, crayon, marker, paint, pastels or other art implements.
  • All pieces of artwork must be completed on 8-inch by 10-inch paper that can be framed. Please send artwork unframed.
  • Students should sign their name on the back of the artwork.
  • Artwork must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Monday, May 26.
  • Artwork may be dropped off at the Office of the Mayor, located in City Hall, 401 N. Morton Ste. 210, or mailed to Maria Heslin, Office of the Mayor, PO Box 100, Bloomington, IN 47402.

Artwork will be displayed in the City Hall Atrium beginning the week of June 5.

The City of Bloomington Community Arts Commission (BCAC) will review the submitted artwork to determine the winners. Prizes include gift certificates to the top three winners as well as gift certificates for art supplies for the winners' schools. The BCAC will supply the prizes for the schools: the first place winner's school will receive $250 for art supplies; second place will receive $150 and third place $100.
