Bloomington, IN -- Get your pet microchipped or adopt a new lifelong friend on Sunday, April 30, 2006, as the Monroe County Humane Association (MCHA) and City of Bloomington Animal Shelter join B97's Pam Thrash at the grand opening of the new PETCO store. The store is located in Eastland Plaza, 2520 East Third Street. The festivities take place from noon - 2 p.m.

The Animal Shelter will have adoptable dogs on site looking for their forever homes. Any dog adopted during the grand opening event will receive a new leash and collar. Adoption fees are $75 for dogs under 5 years and $55 for dogs older than 5 years. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter, vaccines, microchip and heartworm test.

The MCHA will be offering low-cost microchipping for cats and dogs for $25. Cost includes the fee for registering microchips in the national Homeagain Pet Relocation database. On average, microchipping can cost $80-100.

It is estimated that one in every three pets will get lost during its lifetime; 90 percent of those pets won't make it back home. Tags can get lost, but microchips are a permanent, safe form of identification for your pet. More than 20,000 animal shelters across the country, including the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter, use microchip scanners to assist in reuniting pets with their owners. Visit [www.monrohumane.org|http://www.monrohumane.org/] for more information about microchipping.

The MCHA also will have the Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) on site to provide financial assistance to individuals who may need help to spay or neuter their pet(s). Income guidelines apply for eligibility.
