City Celebrates Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month

Bloomington, IN -- The City of Bloomington and other community partners will celebrate Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month with Asian Fest on Saturday, April 29, 2006, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Showers Common. The celebration will include musical and dance performances, cooking demonstrations, and educational and craft activities.

Performances will consist of traditional Indonesian, Filipino and Indian dances; storytelling by members of the Bloomington Storytellers Guild and the Chinese Language Club; a Chinese yo-yo show; and martial arts demonstrations including Tae Kwan Do, Kung Fu, Tai Ji Fan and Tai Chi.

Cooking demonstrations will feature Vietnamese, Eurasian, Chinese and Thai cuisine. Other exhibits include a calligraphy demonstration, Eurasian crafts and activities from Mathers Museum, Indiana University Asian Culture Center, Hanna and the Indian community.

Asian Fest is a collaboration between the City of Bloomington Community Farmers' Market, Indiana University Asian Culture Center and the City of Bloomington Safe and Civil City Program.

Community sponsors include 10th Street Market and Deli, Ivy Tech Community College, Bloomingfoods, Shanti Authentic Indian Cuisine, Lennie's and the Snow Lion.
