Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington Animal Shelter is pleased to announce the implementation of a pilot project in cooperation with Humane Strategies aimed at offering free spay/neuter assistance to individuals whose dogs have unwanted litters of puppies. Humane Strategies ([www.humanestrategies.org|http://www.humanestrategies.org/]) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of shelter animals and decreasing euthanasia.

Rather than placing puppies through "free to good home" ads, the City of Bloomington Animal Care and Control Division, which manages the Shelter, encourages the public to bring the puppies and their parents to the Shelter.

The puppies will be transported on the Rescue Waggin' program to other shelters where they will be spayed or neutered and put up for adoption or they will be evaluated for adoption at the Bloomington Shelter and spayed or neutered prior to placement.

The Shelter will make arrangements to spay the mother and neuter the father for free, and give them both a free rabies shot, vaccinations and flea treatment if necessary, before returning them to their owner. Humane Strategies will pay all associated expenses. The mother and father should be brought to the Shelter at the same time as the puppies and will need to be kept overnight for surgery the next day.

"We are thrilled to be part of this pilot project and so grateful to Humane Strategies for providing the funding," said Laurie Ringquist, Director of Bloomington Animal Care and Control. "This program gets at the heart of pet overpopulation. We stop the parents from having repeat litters and we make sure their offspring don't continue the cycle."

For more information, please call the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter at 812-349-3492. The Shelter is open to the public Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and Tuesday and Friday from noon to 7 p.m. Litters may be relinquished anytime during those hours.
