Bloomington, IN - Mayor Mark Kruzan has proclaimed October as Adopt a Shelter Dog Month in Bloomington. The month helps raise awareness of the millions of great dogs nationwide that end up in shelters every year.

"Our animal shelter has dozens of dogs waiting and wagging to join a new home," Kruzan said. "Half price adoptions are the best deal in dogdom."

To encourage adoption of a shelter dog throughout October, adoption fees will be half price: $37.50 (regularly $75) for dogs under 5 years and $27.50 (regularly $55) for dogs 5 years and older. The adoption fee includes a first round of vaccinations, a free visit to a local veterinary office, heartworm testing, microchip identification and spay/neuter surgery. The market cost of these services is more than $200. In addition, every adopter will receive a gift bag of doggie goodies provided by the Monroe County Humane Association.

In addition to adoption, there are other ways to recognize Adopt A Shelter Dog Month. Consider volunteering at the shelter or becoming a foster parent. Donations of food, toys, treats and bedding are always appreciated. Most, importantly, make sure your own dog is spayed or neutered and wearing a reliable form of identification.

Adoptable animals can be visited at the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter, 3410 S. Walnut, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m. and Tuesdays and Fridays from noon to 7 p.m. Adoptable animals also can be seen on Saturday mornings at the City's Farmers' Market (401 N Morton) from 9 a.m. to noon and can be viewed via the shelter Web site at [www.bloomington.in.gov/animalshelter|www.bloomington.in.gov/adopt-today/].
