Bloomington,  IN - October is Be Diverse Bloomington month and Bloomington Sister Cities, Inc. will celebrate Sister Cities Day with a booth this Saturday October 7, 2006, at the City of Bloomington Community Farmers' Market. The organization will provide information regarding Bloomington's current Sister Cities relationships and offer opportunities for volunteer involvement from 8:30 a.m. until noon.

Bloomington has established formal relationships with three international cities, which include Posoltega, Nicaragua; Santa Clara, Cuba; and Lu Chou Province, Taiwan. The earliest affiliation began between Bloomington and Posoltega in 1988. Since then, participation grew from only a few individuals to more than 1,000 donors with support from organizations such as schools, churches and service clubs.

As a result of these Sister Cities partnerships, permanent programs such as a children's lunch program and a scholarship program have been established in Nicaragua in cooperation with five Nicaraguan universities. Also, Bloomington Sister Cities, Inc,. with help from Clarian Health Group of Indianapolis, shipped donated medical equipment to hospitals in Santa Clara and Havana.

The Lu Chou Province relationship is currently inactive.

Bloomington's Sister Cities Programs are committed to the process of providing an active role in international affairs to the Bloomington community for the ultimate goal of world peace.

Bloomington Sister Cities, Inc. is a member of Sister Cities International and is part of a global network of more than 2,400 partnerships in 130 countries. Sister Cities International promotes peace through mutual respect, understanding and cooperation.
