Bloomington, IN - Mayor Mark Kruzan announced today that the City of Bloomington's second annual Tree City Arts Competition show opens to the public Saturday, Oct. 14 and extends through Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006. The show features 53 pieces of tree-themed artwork, including paintings, photographs and tapestry, created by area artists. Several of the pieces are available for sale.

"The response we received from the arts community for this competition is just terrific," Kruzan said. "This year, we broadened the show to welcome submissions from not just Monroe County, but the other four counties the Bloomington Area Arts Council serves as well -- Owen, Greene, Lawrence and Brown -- and as a result, we received a dozen more entries than last year. The variety of artistic expressions and creativity is rather amazing."

Throughout the duration of the competition, the public is encouraged to visit the atrium of City Hall, 401 N. Morton, to see the art and vote for their favorite pieces. Voting hours are 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and during the hours of the Farmers' Market, 7:00 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. The winning entries will be announced in mid-November.

The first place winner will receive a Memorial Tree designated with a limestone plaque; second and third place winners will receive a Memorial Tree. The individuals will be able to choose from a list of available planting locations in several different City parks.

A reception will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall atrium to thank the artists for their entries and to encourage citizens to visit and experience the art. The reception will be open to the public.

After the show closes in City Hall, it will be featured in local café, wine bar and gallery Tutto Bene, located at the corner of 3rd and Rogers, from the week of November 13 through the end of the year.
