Bloomington, IN - Mayor Mark Kruzan announced today that as part of his Community Collaborations initiative, the City of Bloomington is partnering with Monroe County Government to provide convenient, on-street parking spaces for early voters. The spaces have been set aside in front of the Curry Building, 214 West Seventh St.
"Our goal in collaborating with the County is to make it easier for people to exercise their right to vote," Kruzan said. "Though we are unable to grant all the requests we receive for special parking, in this instance we are hoping that this small gesture will help encourage citizens to participate in the electoral process."
Voters can park in these designated spaces during their time voting in the Curry Building. The parking is available for voters Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. (plus Saturdays, Oct. 27 and Nov. 4) until Nov. 7, 2006, at which time the spaces will revert to the regular two-hour time limit.
"I have always enjoyed working with the City on various projects through the years and that, when all is said and done, the City and County work in a cooperative atmosphere to see that our citizens are cared for," said Monroe County Clerk Jim Fielder. "I can think of nothing better than the voting arena for this type of collaboration and hope to continue working together with other public offices to see that the needs of citizens are first and foremost in all our minds."
The City of Bloomington Traffic Division, part of the Public Works Department, provided and installed signage.
