Nominations Sought for Women of the Year

Bloomington, IN-- The City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Women is seeking nominees for the Woman of the Year, Emerging Leader and Lifetime Contribution Awards. The deadline for submission of nominations is January 24, 2007. The awards will be presented during Women's History Month in March 2007.

The Woman of the Year Award is presented to a woman who has improved the quality of life for other women through inspiration, community service or professional accomplishments above and/or outside regular job responsibilities. The recipient is also someone who serves as a positive role model for girls and women and has made outstanding contributions to the community.

The Lifetime Contribution Award recognizes a woman whose work has significantly advanced the status of women through leadership and service. The Emerging Leader Award acknowledges a woman with a relatively short (less than five years) history of significant achievements and recognizes the potential for future contributions.

Nomination forms are available in the City of Bloomington's Community and Family Resources Department, Suite 260 and online at the City of Bloomington's Website ([www.bloomington.in.gov|http://www.bloomington.in.gov]). Nominations should include the name, address, telephone number and e-mail address of the nominee in addition to the reasons why the nominee merits the award. The nominator also should include his or her name, address, telephone number and e-mail address.

Representatives from the City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Women, Girl Scouts of Tulip Trace Council, League of Women Voters, Indiana University Office for Women's Affairs, Mujeres en Conexion, City of Bloomington Human Rights Commission, Monroe County History Center, Indiana National Organization for Women, Girls Incorporated of Monroe County, Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana-Bloomington, IU Asian Culture Center, and Office of the City Clerk will present the awards.

Past recipients of the Woman of the Year award include Faye Abrell, Elizabeth Bridgewaters, Anne Lemon Brown, Jocelyn Cohen and Helaine Victoria Press, Dorothy Collins, Mary Alice Dunlap, Frances Gilliam, Girls, Inc., Donna Hogle, Sally Jones, Judith Klein, Cindy Kvale, League of Women Voters, Barbara Light, Elizabeth Lion, Middle Way House, Inc., Carrie Newcomer, Catherine Olmer, Elizabeth Radcliffe, Ginny Richey, Cathy Rogers, Mary Frances Roll, Eva Sanders, Vi Simpson, Veda Stanfield, Toby Strout, Viola Taliaferro, Phyllis Trinkle, Gracia Valliant, Kristin Willison, Barbara Wolf, Vicky Wyatt and Charlotte Zietlow.

The past recipients of the Lifetime Contribution Awards are Jeannine Butler, Helen Gibbons and LaVerta Terry. The past recipients of the Emerging Leader Award are the Girl Scouts of Monroe County, Julie Thomas, Debra Vance and Stacy Jones.
