Bloomington, IN -- The City of Bloomington's Commission on the Status of Black Males is soliciting nominees for the second annual award to recognize local contributions by African American youth/young men and to encourage the development of future leaders.

"When the City of Bloomington established its Commission on the Status of Black Males, it did so in part to examine and propose solutions to some of the challenges faced by African American males," Mayor Mark Kruzan said. "The Annual Recognition of Outstanding Black Male Leaders of Tomorrow award offers a unique opportunity for the Commission and the City to recognize young, emerging African American leaders and affirm their contributions to our community."

Nominees must have resided in Monroe County for at least one year, and must have been involved personally or professionally in making meaningful contributions to the Bloomington community. Bloomington High School North student Matt Herndon received the first award at the City's Black History Month Gala on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006.

The deadline for nominations is February 9, 2007. Nominations can be made online [www.bloomington.in.gov/cfrd|/sections/viewSection.php?section_id=121]. Forms also are available from the City's Community and Family Resources Department, City Hall, 401 North Morton Street, Suite 260.
