City's Human Rights Commission Anounces Essay and Art Contest Winners

Bloomington, IN -- The [City of Bloomington Human Rights Commission (BHRC)|/documents/viewDocument.php?document_id=164] has announced the winners of its 16th Annual Essay and Art competition. With a theme of "Everyone Wins When Everyone's In," this year's contest was an overwhelming success.

Mayor Mark Kruzan will present the awards at a ceremony on Tuesday, March 6, 2007, in City Hall's Council Chambers, 401 North Morton St. The public is invited to attend the celebration, which begins at 4:00 p.m.

The commission thanks prize sponsors Robinson Construction, Aver's Pizza, Andrews, Harrell, Mann, Carmin and Parker, Cassidy Electrical Contractors, and Crider and Crider Inc. BHRC members Byron Bangert, Valeri Haughton, Dorothy Granger, Maria File-Muriel and Emily Bowman served as the judges of the contest.

Essay Winners

Lower Elementary Level:

First Place: Catie May, Third Grade from Childs Elementary

Second Place: John Im, Third Grade from University Elementary

Third Place: Catherine McGibbon, Second Grade from Childs Elementary

Upper Elementary Level:

First Place: Jack Dill, Sixth Grade, Harmony School

Second Place: Sarah Wegener, Fifth Grade, University Elementary

Third Place: Jonathan Bunton, Fifth Grade, Templeton Elementary

Middle School:

First Place: Alisha Chen, Seventh Grade, Tri-North Middle School

Second Place: Elizabeth DeMoss, Seventh Grade, Tri-North Middle School

Third Place: Brandon Marcum-Gilmore, Eighth Grade, Batchelor Middle School

High School:

First Place: Rebecca Heavilon, 10th Grade, Bloomington High School South
