Bloomington, IN -- The City of Bloomington's [Environmental Commission |/sections/viewSection.php?section_id=44]and [Commission on Sustainability|/sections/viewSection.php?section_id=82], in partnership with EnergyPros, will present the sixth in their 2007 series of 11 seminars on "Home Construction and Remodeling for Energy Efficiency" next week. The free, public seminar will be held Monday, June 18, 2007, from 7 to 9 p.m. and will take place in the Rogers Room of the Bloomington/Monroe County Convention Center.

The monthly energy seminars are offered through November and focus on reducing energy use for heating and cooling of homes through innovative home construction and remodeling techniques. Using these techniques, individuals can not only reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, they can also save money on energy bills.

During the seminars, presenter Bob Geswein of the Harrison County REMC will cover basic building science regarding foundations, framing, caulking, windows and doors, insulation, heating and cooling, ventilation and water heating. In addition, there will be time for questions and more in-depth coverage of topics that are of specific interest to the audience. Past seminars have had many repeat attendees, as there is always something new to learn.[image:2126,right]

Homeowners, prospective homeowners, architects, designers, builders, realtors, and developers are encouraged to attend. The seminars are free and open to the public and are sponsored by the City Commissions as part of their effort to encourage innovation, information sharing and dialogue regarding sustainability in Bloomington. Registration is not required.

Seminar speakers come with a variety of academic and professional backgrounds, and some may be associated with companies that sell products or services related to the topics addressed in their presentations. While the City of Bloomington does not endorse any particular product, service, speaker, or the content of any presentation, it does believe that the speakers are capable of presenting well-reasoned positions in their areas of expertise.

In April, Americans in all 50 states called on their representatives to "Step it Up." This calls for the passage of legislation that will drastically cut carbon emissions, which are largely responsible for increases in global temperatures. Carbon emissions result from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas, which are the predominant sources of energy we currently use.

Locally, City of Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan signed the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement last year, which calls for a 7 percent decrease in emissions from the level of 1990 by 2012.
