Mayor Announces BEAD Logo Competition

Bloomington, IN - Mayor Mark Kruzan and Miah Michaelsen, the City's Assistant Economic Development Director for the Arts, announced today that the City of Bloomington is calling on citizens to develop a logo for the Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD).

The winning designer will receive a $500 honorarium and may have her or his logo used to promote the City's BEAD.

"BEAD is designed to enhance our downtown's character and commerce, and this logo will play a key role in establishing the look and
identification for the district," Kruzan said. "We also want BEAD to provide opportunities for artists to showcase their works and earn money
from their talents so we want to kick that off with this competition."

BEAD is Bloomington's downtown entertainment and arts district that will feature a thriving arts, music, theater and museum scene anchored by many strong, established cultural institutions, growing commercial and retail businesses, restaurants and residences.

According to Michaelsen, BEAD encompasses many distinct character areas, which should be reflected in the logo. Character areas include Kirkwood Avenue, Restaurant Row, the Show District, Arts Row and City Commons.

"Each of BEAD's character areas will have a special flavor of its own, and will feature particular visual cues and themes plus other amenities to help visitors know what area they are exploring," Michaelsen said. "This is the first of several initiatives we will be announcing regarding BEAD's development this year."

For a complete listing of character areas, descriptions and the BEAD map, please visit [www.bloomington.in.gov/bead].

The logo must be relevant to BEAD's purpose and goals, which include:

  • To focus creative enterprise downtown and enhance Bloomington's economic vitality.
  • To broaden public access to the arts, foster those that make their living with their craft, and ensure sustained growth in Bloomington's creative industries for its long term economic development.
  • To support Bloomington's performing and fine artists, cultural organizations, museums, restaurants, entertainment venues, businesses and craftspeople.
  • To expand the city's creative capacity and market downtown Bloomington as a vibrant and thriving entertainment and arts destination to residents and visitors.
