City Receives Federal Funding for Housing Counseling Program

Bloomington, IN – Mayor Mark Kruzan announced today the City of Bloomington Housing and Neighborhood Development (HAND) Department was awarded monies from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). HAND received 100 percent of its $36,503 request for funding.

The HAND Department, a HUD-certified housing counseling agency, provides a variety of one-to-one counseling and education programs to Bloomington, Monroe County and other surrounding county residents. All housing counseling services offered through the HAND Department are free.

The following services are offered through HAND under its Housing Counseling program:

Homebuyers Education Class – for prospective home buyers interested in learning about the home buying process, as well as pre-purchase home-ownership counseling.

Delinquent/Default Counseling – to assist homeowners who are behind in their mortgages.

Reverse Mortgage Counseling – for homeowners over 62 years of age and their families interested in learning how to access the equity available in their homes.

Predatory Lending – to educate consumers about the definition of predatory lending and the dangers to potential homebuyers or existing homeowners of predatory lending.

Additional counseling services include financial literacy education, rental counseling and education, and homeless counseling at the Shalom Community Center.
