City’s Commission on Status of Black Males Seeks Nominees for Annual Award

Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington's Commission on the Status of Black Males is soliciting nominees for its third annual award to recognize local contributions by African American youth/young men and to encourage the development of future leaders.

"When the City of Bloomington established its Commission on the Status of Black Males, it did so in part to examine and propose solutions to some of the challenges faced by African American males," Mayor Mark Kruzan said. "The Annual Recognition of Outstanding Black Male Leaders of Tomorrow award offers a unique opportunity for the Commission and the City to recognize young, emerging African American leaders and affirm their contributions to our community."

Nominees must have resided in Monroe County for at least one year, and must have been involved personally or professionally in making meaningful contributions to the Bloomington community.

Past recipients include Bloomington High School North student Matt Herndon in 2006 and Bloomington High School South senior Cordero L. Rhyne and Indiana University student Alvin Henry in 2007. This year's award will be presented at the City of Bloomington's Black History Month Gala on February 23.

The deadline for nominations is February 15, 2008. Nominations can be made online at www.bloomington.in.gov/cfrd.
