Bloomington, IN -- The City of Bloomington Animal Shelter and Monroe County Humane Association joined forces last November to mobilize Bloomington's animal-loving community and help our shelter. The groups asked for the public's help to be eligible to win an extreme shelter makeover from Zootoo House, a national organization dedicated to improving the condition of animal shelters, facilitating adoptions, and making shelter visits a positive experience for youth and adults.
"This is a very significant contest because it is decided by the dedication of entire communities," Mayor Mark Kruzan said. "Imagine the value to Bloomington and Monroe County if our shelter is able to garner one of these awards."
Richard Thomas, former CEO of Meow Mix, launched Zootoo House in early 2007. To celebrate the launch, the group announced the first-ever Shelter Makeover Program in America. Zootoo House will provide one shelter makeover, valued at up to $1 million, one cash prize of $10,000 and 18 cash prizes of $5,000 to shelters nationwide. The contest ends March 31, 2008.
The community responded to the request and the shelter is currently ranked #38 with 236,634 points. The current top ranked shelter has 1.8 million points and the 20th ranked shelter has 385,207. The top 20 shelters will receive a cash prize.
"We know Bloomington residents care about animals and our shelter because of the overwhelming support we have received," Laurie Ringquist, Director of the City's Animal Care and Control division said. "We are asking everyone to make another effort during the last few weeks of the contest to push us into the top 20."
To qualify to receive a makeover, shelters and their supporters are encouraged to register at Zootoo.com, an online community established in 2007 to provide a forum for discussion about pet-related issues, care and products. When first-time visitors go to Zootoo.com, they can select a shelter of their choice to support. Every time they visit the site - whether it is to share an opinion, post a photo or refer a friend - they will automatically earn points for their designated shelter.
"Prize money would be used for renovations in a part of the shelter that is over 30 years old," Sarah Hayes, CEO of the Monroe County Humane Association said. "Help us make that dream come true by earning points for the shelter. It's easy, it's fast and it's free." # # #
