Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington is hosting the 6th Annual Homeward Bound 5k Walk on April 6, 2008. The event raises money to provide housing and prevent homelessness in the Bloomington area.

This year's event includes a welcome by Mayor Mark Kruzan, who is encouraged about the difference Bloomington is making regarding homelessness.

"The Homeward Bound Walk has a special place in the heart of the Bloomington community," Kruzan said. "Not only are we providing for our neighbors that are less fortunate, but we are increasing awareness of poverty and homelessness and trying hard to eliminate the causes of these conditions in our community."

Bloomington's Homeward Bound Walk has raised more than $260,000 since 2003, and 100% of the money raised goes directly to 13 local agencies. Agencies participating in this year's walk include: Amethyst House, Area10 Agency on Aging, Center for Behavioral Health, Community Kitchen, Hoosier Hills Food Bank, Martha's House, Mental Health Alliance, Middle Way House, Monroe County United Ministries, Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, Shalom Community Center, Stepping Stones and Youth Services Bureau.

The mission of the Homeward Bound 5k Walk is to raise funds to prevent homelessness and raise awareness of the homeless and near homeless population in Bloomington. Committee members and community residents work to inform and educate the community about the homeless. The 6th Annual Homeward Bound Walk is 100% volunteer driven.

The event will begin at Third Street Park at noon with registration, food and entertainment, including face painting and activities by WonderLab. After a few brief greetings from local leaders, the walk will begin at 2 p.m.

Those interested can learn more about Homeward Bound or register for the walk at www.bloomington.in.gov. Pre-registration is not required, and everyone is welcome to join the cause to help Homeward Bound make a difference in the community.
