City of Bloomington Human Rights Commission Announces Essay/Art Contest Winners

-- The City of Bloomington Human Rights Commission (BHRC) sponsored its annual essay/art contest for local students in grades K-12. This year's contest theme was "Variety is the Spice of Life: Appreciating Differences."

This is the 17th annual Human Rights Commission essay/art contest. The judges for the entries were Byron Bangert, Valeri Haughton, Dorothy Granger, Beth Kreitl, Carolyn Calloway-Thomas, Luis Fuentes-Rohwer and Emily Bowman. All judges also are members of the commission.

An awards ceremony will be held on Monday, March 24, at 4 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 401 North Morton Street. Mayor Mark Kruzan will present the prizes, which were donated by Robinson Construction, Aver's Pizza, Andrews, Harrell, Mann Carmin & Parker and One World Enterprises. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.

The essay winners at the lower elementary school level were: first place, Anna Raphael, third grade, from University Elementary and second place, Ahmad S. Rahman, third grade, from University Elementary. Corey Dadds, fifth grade, from Harmony won first place at the upper elementary level. The middle school essay winners were both eighth graders from Batchelor: Miranda Schumes won first place and Jordan Kern won second place.

The art winners at the lower elementary level were first place Hyun Ki Lee, third grade, from University Elementary; second place, Marina Blackwell, third grade, from Childs and third place, Doh Youn Rim, third grade, from University. The upper elementary art winners were first place, Adam Diersing and Stella Winterman, fourth grade, from Templeton Elementary. Kaiya Grundmann, fourth grade, and Olivia Dagley, sixth grade, both from Templeton, won second place.
