B-Line Trail Signature Artwork Finalists Announced

Bloomington, IN - Mayor Mark Kruzan announced today that artists Amy Brier, Dale Enochs and Charlotte Paul have been selected as finalists in the B-Line Trail Signature Artwork Competition, a contest that will culminate in the installation of the B-Line Signature Artwork in early 2009.

"Having a significant work of art at one of the B-Line Trail's large gathering spaces will create a dynamic visual gateway to the Showers Plaza, the Trail and BEAD," Kruzan said. "We really look forward to seeing the work of these exemplary finalists."

Finalist Amy Brier has years of experience working as a limestone sculptor. A resident of Bloomington since 1993, Brier holds an M.F.A. in sculpture from Indiana University. Before completing her graduate degree, she was a carver for the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, working exclusively in Indiana limestone. She is the founder of the Indiana Limestone Sculpture Symposium and her work has been exhibited both locally and internationally.

Dale Enochs has worked as an artist in Bloomington for more than 25 years primarily in limestone. He completed an M.F.A. at Indiana University in 1981 and his work is held in collections in the U.S. as well as internationally. Recent commissions include "Sculpture in the Park" in White River State Park in Indianapolis and a wall relief, "Elemental Indiana," at the new Indianapolis Airport.

Artist Charlotte Paul has 30 years experience working with public art commissions. Paul, who creates art-glass works, has been awarded fellowships from the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts in both 2005 and 2007. Her work has been exhibited extensively in the U.S. and can be seen locally in the Bloomington Hospital Chapel.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to work with local artists on this project," said Assistant Economic Development Director for the Arts Miah Michaelsen. "The selection process was difficult. The high quality of the submissions received serves as evidence of the strength of the artistic community here in our region."

The finalists were chosen by a five-member selection panel consisting of two local artists, one representative of the City of Bloomington's Parks and Recreation Department, one representative from the City's Arts Commission and one at-large appointment by the Assistant Economic Development Director for the Arts.

The finalists will prepare detailed drawings, a budget, a list of specific installation needs, a project narrative and a timeline regarding their concept for the artwork. After further review one artist will be selected through a ranking process to fabricate and install the artwork. The piece will be located on the B-Line Trail near the Showers Building and in the Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD).
