Bloomington, IN - Mayor Mark Kruzan has announced that the City of Bloomington will be holding two interactive public workshops to explore and define design strategies for improving the look and feel of public spaces along South Rogers Street.
These design workshops are the first key steps to completing a comprehensive study of potential improvements along the corridor. The streetscape will address design elements located on public right-of-ways including benches, landscaping features, signage, street lighting and bicycle and pedestrian improvements. The area being studied begins at Kirkwood Avenue in the north and ends at the former Indiana Railroad tracks (near Hillside Drive) to the south.
"It is a great thing when the City can collaborate with the community to brainstorm," Kruzan said. "We look forward to collecting valuable insight from residents."
The workshops will provide an opportunity for citizens to offer ideas, suggestions and feedback regarding the future look and feel of South Rogers Street directly to project designers from the Schneider Corporation. The collective efforts will result in design guidelines and a strategic plan that will target public and private investments along South Rogers Street for years to come.
"The Rogers streetscape design project is the culmination of two neighborhood plans; the McDoel plan in 2002 and the Prospect Hill plan in 2005," Lisa Abbott, Director of the Housing and Neighborhood Development Department said. "We are excited to see these plans now move forward in achieving some of their goals through this next very important step."
The design workshops will be held on Thursday, July 31, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, August 2, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Members of the public can attend at any point during the scheduled times. Both of the workshops will be located at the Bloomington Hospital Medical Arts Building, Classroom #1, 619 W. 1st Street.
