Bloomington
, IN -- Beginning Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter will be open for [Dixie|image:4361,left]adoptions on Sunday afternoons from 1 - 4 p.m. In addition to the new Sunday hours, the public can visit adoptable animals at the Shelter, located at 3410 South Walnut, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m., and Tuesdays and Fridays from noon until 7 p.m.

"Our goal is to make the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter as convenient and welcoming as we can for all members of our community," said Laurie Ringquist, Director of the City's Animal Care and Control Division. When individuals are thinking of adding a pet to their family, we hope the Animal Shelter is their first choice,"

This initiative supports the Adopt Today! campaign goal of increasing adoptions.

"We anticipate that by offering more weekend hours we will increase the number of people able to visit the shelter," Ringquist said. "By being open on Sunday, potential adopters can view and visit with all of the animals available for adoption."[Jasmine|image:4362,right]

Sunday hours will be staffed by a limited number of staff members and volunteers. The Shelter will not accept incoming animals on Sundays, nor will Animal Control Officers be on duty. Only the adoption center portion of the building will be open.

Adoptable animals also can be viewed on the shelter web site at [www.bloomington.in.gov/animalshelter|www.bloomington.in.gov/animalshelter] and on the dozens of posters hung up throughout the community, sponsored by the Monroe County Humane Association.

For more information about adoptable animals call 812-349-3492.
