, IN - The City of Bloomington's Council for Community Accessibility (CCA) has awarded "AccessAbility" decals to 20 local businesses. Mayor Mark Kruzan and Katie Herron, Chair of the Council for Community Accessibility, recently sent a letter of commendation to the businesses, indicating that the decal award signifies the business is welcoming to persons with disabilities.
The businesses that have been awarded with decals are:
  • Arby's, S. Walnut St.
  • Armed Forces Career Center
  • The Book Rack, Pete Ellis Dr.
  • Bloomington Monroe County Convention Center
  • Brian Werth Financial Services
  • Burger King West
  • The Butcher's Block
  • Campus View Child Care
  • Casa Brava Mexican Restaurant, W. 3rd St.
  • Cold Stone Creamery
  • The Copper Cup, N. College Ave.
  • Indiana Voice and Data
  • Lifestyle Kitchens and Bath
  • Moe's Southwest Grill
  • Quizno's Subs, E. 3rd St.
  • Rolling Thunder Fun Factory
  • Sherwood & Associates
  • Subway, N. Walnut St.
  • Zodiac Hair Salon

The decals are usually displayed on the storefronts to recognize businesses that have taken the necessary steps, such as having their parking spaces, access paths, doors, entrances, service counters, common areas and restrooms, meet the basic requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The decals don't expire unless businesses make changes that negatively affect accessibility.
The AccessAbility decal program was initiated in the 1990s by the late Kristin Willison and Chuck Osborn, former chairs of the CCA. Volunteer members of the council conduct the assessments under the guidance of the CCA's Business Accessibility Committee, which is chaired by Suzie Rimstidt and includes David Carter, Chuck Osborn and Vicki Pappas. Support from the City of Bloomington comes from Craig Brenner, City of Bloomington Special Projects Coordinator, Community and Family Resources Department, and Barbara McKinney, City of Bloomington Human Rights Attorney.
The awards will be formally announced at the Council's Annual Awards Ceremony on Monday, Oct. 25 at Chapman's Banquet Center, which received an AccessAbility decal in 2009.

CCA members continue to provide free accessibility screenings for businesses. For more information about the AccessAbility program or to request an accessibility screening, contact Craig Brenner at 349-3471 or brennerc@bloomington.in.gov.
