Making Bloomington Modern: The Showers Family Legacy

The Bloomington Historic Preservation Commission and Monroe County Historic Preservation Board of Review are jointly sponsoring a lecture by Carrol Krause, a local journalist and historian. The talk, titled "Making Bloomington Modern: The Showers Family Legacy," is the second in the Rosemary Miller Lecture Series. Carrol Krause's new book describes the legacy the Showers family left on the City of Bloomington, a legacy that affects not only the City's economy but its landscape, neighborhoods and lifestyle. The book, Showers Brothers Furniture Company: The Shared Fortunes of a Family, a City, and a University, will be released by IU Press in June.

The talk will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3 in the Showers Common Council Chambers. James Madison, Thomas and Kathryn Miller Professor Emeritus in the history department, will moderate. Eric Sandweiss, Carmony Chair of the history department, will provide introductory remarks.

In conjunction with this event The Monroe County History Center has made available from its collection a display of Showers furniture for the atrium of City Hall.
