In Celebration of Youth Art Month BEAD to Exhibit Works from Middle Way House Youth Art Program
BLOOMINGTON, IN - In celebration of National Youth Art Month, the City of Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD) will showcase artworks created by children participating in the Middle Way House Art Program. The show will be on display throughout March in the Atrium of City Hall, 401 N Morton St.
The Middle Way House Art Program works with children who have witnessed or experienced the trauma of domestic violence. The art program gives participants a means of expressing themselves in a safe environment, build self-esteem and gain new experiences. Children are encouraged to use their imaginations and explore with new materials.
Emily Bornstein, an IU student, founded the program in January 2011. Art projects are brought to the children in the childcare center and after school program 3 days a week. The art projects are developed and implemented by a team of eight IU Fine Arts students.
Middle Way House, a not-for-profit social service agency, offers services and programs to women and children who have been victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Middle Way continually works toward the creation of a safe community that provides opportunities for meaningful participation, personal growth and creative expression. For more information about Middle Way House or the art program email Emily Bornstein at embborns@umail.iu.edu or visit their website at http://middlewayhouse.org/.
A reception for the exhibit will be held on Friday, March 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Atrium. The exhibit will be on display March 1-30. Exhibition hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, as well as additional evening and weekend hours when City Hall is open for meetings.
The City of Bloomington is committed to providing opportunities for area artists to exhibit artwork in the City Hall Atrium. For more information on the exhibition program contact Miah Michaelsen, Assistant Economic Development Director for the Arts, at michaelm@bloomington.in.gov or (812) 349-3534.
