City Announces Applications for Citizens' Academy

Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington Housing and Neighborhood Development (HAND) Department announced today that applications are available for its Citizens' Academy program. Citizens' Academy provides participants with an interactive learning experience about municipal government services, programs and responsibilities.

Kay Thorbecke and Robert Harman have participated in the Citizens' Academy class and wrote the following about their experience.
"Kay and I have lived in Bloomington for well over 30 years and we still love it. There are many quality of life features in this town that make Bloomington very special and livable. Most of us know what they are but there is one gem that seems rarely to get any mention and that is the Citizens Academy. While it is great to enjoy the numerous cultural and entertainment amenities that Bloomington has to offer we also believe that it is important to know how our city functions. The Citizens Academy offers everyone the opportunity to learn about the various branches of city government and meet with the people who make the decisions that impact our daily lives. The evenings are informative and engrossing and add immensely to one's appreciation of our favorite little town. Kay took the class first. After every class I couldn't wait for her to come and share her experiences from the evening. I signed up for the very next class and loved it too. Meeting the folks at Planning or transit or the Mayor's Office. It's been about 10 years since we participated and are so thankful that we did. I think it really adds to your appreciation of the whole city. Without doubt the best and most informative way of really getting to know Bloomington and how it works so well. An absolute must do for any one who loves Bloomington."

The 2012 Citizens' Academy will meet weekly from August 16 through October 11. The session will be limited to a total of 30 participants to ensure a quality experience for all participants.

City residents who are interested in civic participation or increasing their knowledge about local government operation can apply online at the City of Bloomington's web site [http://bloomington.in.gov/documents/viewDocument.php?document_id=347].

The deadline for 2012 Citizens' Academy applications is Monday, July 16, 2012. For an application and further information about Citizens' Academy contact Vickie Provine at provinev@bloomington.in.gov or 349.3505.
