Brain Extravaganza set to Invade Bloomington
Bloomington, IN - Twenty-two brains will soon be displayed throughout the Bloomington community from late April until October of this year. Sponsored by Jill Bolte Taylor BRAINS, Inc, these brains stand 5 feet tall, and will be a sight to see!
The inspiration for these brains came from Jill Bolte Taylor herself, who is a Bloomington resident. After suffering from a stroke, the Harvard-trained and published neuroanatomist spent 8 years recovering her functional and thinking abilities. This led Taylor to founding a not-for-profit organization with a mission to provide educational services and promote programs related to the advancement of brain awareness, appreciation, exploration, education, injury prevention, neurological recovery, and the value of movement on mental and physical health, as well as other activities that support this purpose.
After personally experiencing the large fiberglass cows that were once on display in Chicago, Taylor was inspired by the concept of having gigantic, beautiful and anatomically correct brains on display throughout Bloomington. Now, nearly a year of labor from Taylor and many other locals later, the brains are finally ready.
Each brain will include a plaque with five fun and educational brain facts along with a special question. A mobile app also will be available that will let users paint their own brains and share them with others.
The Brain Extravaganza will begin with a launch party on April 28, 2012, from noon to 2:00 p.m. in the Bloomington High School South Auxiliary Gymnasium,
1965 S. Walnut St. All 22 brains will be on display before being transported to their respective locations around Bloomington. Everyone is welcome to get a sneak peek at the newest addition to Bloomington's landscape.
