Medicare Part D, also called the Medicare prescription drug benefit, is a federal program to subsidize the costs of prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries. It was enacted as part of the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA) and went into effect on Jan. 1, 2006. Individuals are eligible for prescription drug coverage under Medicare Part D if they are entitled to benefits under Medicare Part A and/or enrolled in Part B. Beneficiaries can obtain the drug benefit through two types of private plans: a Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) for drug coverage only or a Medicare Advantage plan (MA) that covers both medical services and prescription drugs (MA-PD).
