Middle Way House and Bloomington Arts Commission Exhibits on Display

Bloomington, Ind. - ­­­­Throughout October, the City of Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD) will be hosting two exhibitions in the Atrium of City Hall, 401 N. Morton Street. The first, "Wall Flowers," a collection of photographs by artist Angela Herrmann, is sponsored by Middle Way House in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Middle Way's "Wall Flowers" exhibit illustrates that "from the most inhospitable of places can emerge something of great beauty, strength and resilience." The botanical photographs can be seen as metaphors for women trapped in abusive situations who, despite all odds, manage not only to survive domestic violence but move on to flourish and become the strong, beautiful people those around them always knew they could be. Photographer Angela Herrmann, an Indiana native, has been taking pictures since she was 12 years old when she picked up a Brownie Hawkeye camera at a garage sale. She spent a year as a traveling photographer before studying photojournalism at Indiana University, Bloomington. The botanical wonders on display in "Wall Flowers" represent some of her favorite subjects, besides her family and friends. Also featured during the month of October are images and materials from project grants provided by the Bloomington Arts Commission in recognition of National Arts and Humanities Month. The materials on exhibit celebrate the wealth of arts and culture in Bloomington and showcase the many ways the Arts Commission supports arts programming in the city. On display are project samples from WonderLab, the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, the Writers Guild at Bloomington, Raas Royalty, Harmony School, and the Boys and Girls Club Lincoln Street Chapter.

Both exhibits are on display through Oct. 31. Exhibition hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, as well as additional evening and weekend hours when City Hall is open for meetings.
