Bloomington Arts Commission Announces October 2013 Arts Project Grant Award Recipients

Bloomington, Ind. -- The City of Bloomington Arts Commission is pleased to announce its October 2013 grant recipients. Grants are made available to nonprofit organizations participating in arts activities that align with the current areas of focus of the Arts Commission: to cultivate a community in which residents appreciate the value of personal and collective artistic activity; to encourage collaboration in and diversification of artistic activities that include participants from across the community; to enhance and support a high level of artistry; and to support the economic vitality and interests of local artists and arts organizations.

Seventeen organizations in the Bloomington community submitted grant applications for specific arts programs and were evaluated in three categories: artistic quality, community impact and organizational capacity. The following 13 organizations received the highest ranking and were granted funding during the October grant round:

Bloomington PRIDE, Ltd, $787 for the 2014 Bloomington PRIDE Film Festival.

Bloomington Winter Farmers' Market in partnership with the Center for Sustainable Living, $480 for Music at the Winter Farmers Market.

Krampus Legend and Arts Workshop (KLAW), $863 for their Krampus Night: Costume Design and Construction project.

Gallery Walk Group, $750 for the 2014 Gallery Walks.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Bloomington - Lincoln Street Unit, $750 for their Book Binding and Arts Journal project.

Roundabout Opera for Kids, $796 for the commission and performance of Roundabout Opera for Kids: Discovery of Fire.

Lotus Education and Arts Foundation, $1,137 for their Masks from Around the World project.

Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, $900 to present The Animated Orchestra, a family concert showcasing music from the world of cartoons.

Jazz from Bloomington, $740 for their concert, Future of Jazz.

New Hope Family Shelter, Inc., $730 for their project, Story of Hope Art Program Experience (SHAPE).

WonderLab Museum of Science, Health and Technology, $756 for their Nano Art Exhibition and Special Activities project.

Bloomington Playwrights Project, $900 for their BPP After School Drama Program.

Monroe County Civic Theatre, $480 for their 25th Annual Shakespeare in the Park presentation of Hamlet.

The Arts Project Grant program is another effort under the City's strategy to leverage and expand the economic development potential of the arts in Bloomington. According to the 2012 Americans for the Arts study, Arts and Economic Prosperity IV, Bloomington's nonprofit arts sector contributes $72.3 million to the local economy annually through direct spending by arts organizations and their audiences.
