City of Bloomington Announces 2014 Buskirk-Chumley Theater Grant Recipients

Bloomington, Ind.
- The City of Bloomington's Department of Parks and Recreation and BEAD announce that seven community projects will each receive subsidized use of the Buskirk-Chumley Theater for one day during 2014 through the Buskirk-Chumley Theater Grant Program.

The following is a list of recipients with a brief description of each project:

  • Center for Sustainable Living: "Trashion Refashion Show," an event that engages artists, designers and models of all ages and walks of life to raise awareness about creating wearable art from discarded clothing, recyclables and non-recyclables.

  • City of Bloomington Volunteer Network: "Be More Awards," which recognizes exceptional volunteers during a community-wide celebration of volunteerism.

  • Community Kitchen of Monroe County, Inc.: "Bloomington Chef's Challenge," a fundraiser featuring three area chefs competing to create the best dish in one hour using a secret ingredient and food donated by local farmers.

  • TEDxBloomington: "What Goes Round," a one-day event featuring a curated line-up of locally, nationally and internationally respected speakers presenting talks around a core topic and encouraging the audience to interact and engage based upon insights gleaned from the presentations.

  • Cardinal Stage Company: "2014 Holiday Show," a family-friendly musical theatre offering as a part of Cardinal's 2014 Mainstage Season.

  • Bloomington Historic Preservation Commission: "Rosemary Miller Lecture Series," featuring Will Fellows, author of "A Passion to Preserve, Gay Men as Keepers of Culture," who will speak on the role of gay men in the reinvestment and revitalization of historic neighborhoods and towns.

  • The Burroughs Century: "We Are Here Because of You," a spoken-word event featuring the work of William S. Burroughs and curated by Lydia Lunch. The works will be read by a small group featuring Lunch, Jerry Stahl, Bibbe Hansen, Tony O'Neill and Nicole Blackman, who will be accompanied by a diverse group of local and national musicians selected by the Bloomington record label Secretly Canadian. The event is part of The Burroughs Century, a multi-day festival in February 2014, which honors the 100th anniversary of the birth of acclaimed author, essayist, painter and spoken-word performer William S. Burroughs.

The Buskirk-Chumley Theater Grant Program is an effort under the City's strategy to leverage and expand the economic development potential of the arts in Bloomington. According to the 2012 Americans for the Arts study, Arts and Economic Prosperity IV, Bloomington's nonprofit arts sector contributes $72.3 million to the local economy annually through direct spending by arts organizations and their audiences.
