Boys & Girls Clubs Winter Show "What a Wonderful World!" is December's Exhibit
Bloomington, Ind. - During the month of December, the City of Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD) will showcase artworks created by members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Bloomington in the Showers Atrium of City Hall, 401 N. Morton St.
The show, "What a Wonderful World!" is nature-themed and includes art from members ages 6 through 16. Club members spent the semester learning about the natural world and drawing inspiration from it for their artwork. In November, members took a field trip to Hilltop Garden and Nature Center to learn about gardening and do some sketching on the grounds. Throughout the semester, members also did plein air landscape drawings and frottage with natural materials, among other projects. "What a Wonderful World!" also includes member-made paintings of Indiana wildlife and nature scenes, which will be for sale as a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Bloomington Visual Arts Program.
The exhibit will be on display Dec. 3 through 31. Exhibition hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, as well as additional evening and weekend hours when City Hall is open for meetings. A reception featuring performances by the Lincoln Street Club's Lindsay O'Brien Kesling Performing Arts Program, including the club's Choir, Hip-Hop Dance, Rainbow Dance, Violin and Improv groups, will be held on Friday, Dec. 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The performance will start at 7:30 and light refreshments will be served.
This project is another effort under the City's strategy to leverage and expand the economic development potential of the arts in Bloomington. According to the 2012 Americans for the Arts study, Bloomington's nonprofit arts sector contributes $72.3 million to the local economy annually through direct spending by arts organizations and their audiences. The City of Bloomington is committed to providing opportunities for area artists to exhibit artwork at City Hall. For more information on the exhibition program, contact Assistant Economic Development Director for the Arts Miah Michaelsen at michaelm@bloomington.in.gov or 349.3534.
