City of Bloomington Releases Minority and Women-Owned Business Directory

Bloomington, Ind. ‒ The City of Bloomington Safe and Civil City Program has compiled and published a new directory, The City of Bloomington Minority & Women-Owned Business Directory, which highlights minority and women-owned businesses serving Bloomington and Monroe County. The directory is user-friendly, organizing local businesses both alphabetically and by area of service.

The directory was developed for use by the general public to help provide visibility to the diverse businesses found in our community, serve as a valuable resource for individuals as well as corporate purchasing agents, promote equity of economic opportunities and help eliminate barriers for minority and women-owned businesses.

According to Danise Alano-Martin, Director of Economic & Sustainable Development for the City of Bloomington, "On every page of the directory the diversity of businesses contributing to the economic vitality of our region is highlighted."

The U.S. Census Bureau's 2007 Survey of Business Owners found that women business owners in Bloomington generated more than $189 million in receipts and paid nearly $40.5 million in payroll. Bloomington's minority-owned businesses contributed about $90.9 million in receipts and paid employees nearly $14.2 million. Despite these contributions, women and minorities continue to be underrepresented in our country, state and city.
