City of Bloomington Calls for Nominations for Outstanding Black Male Leaders of Tomorrow Awards

The City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Black Males is accepting nominations for its annual Outstanding Black Male Leaders of Tomorrow Awards. The awards encourage the development of future leaders and recognize local contributions by young African-Americans.

Awards are given in two categories: high school-aged, African-American boys and men and African-American men who are out of high school and younger than 30 years old. Nominations [must be made online by clicking "Submit a Nomination for 2015."|/documents/viewDocument.php?document_id=1912] Nominees must have resided in Monroe County for at least one year and must have been involved personally or professionally in making meaningful contributions to the Bloomington community. The deadline for nominations is Feb. 9.

"The City established its Commission on the Status of Black Males in part to examine and propose solutions to some of the challenges faced by African-American men," Mayor Mark Kruzan said. "These awards provide a unique opportunity for our community to recognize young, emerging African-American leaders and affirm their contributions."

Recipients of the awards will be presented at the 2015 City of Bloomington Black History Month Gala on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.. The Gala will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn, 245 N. College Ave. Tickets for the Gala go on sale Jan. 30 and are available through the Buskirk-Chumley Theater Box Office at 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. or [www.buskirkchumley.org].

Past recipients of the awards include Matt Herndon, Cordero L. Rhyne, Alvin Henry, Gerald L. Mitchell, Eddie R. Cole, Jr., Rashawn Ray, Adrian Land, Aaron Barnes, Myles Adams, Burnell Grimes, Landon Jones and Gabriel Jones.
