Monroe County Energy Challenge Presents "Explore Energy" at Bloomington Community Farmers' Market

Bloomington, Ind. - The Monroe County Energy Challenge (MCEC) will be hosting the first Explore Energy event at the Bloomington Community Farmers' Market on Saturday, June 27, from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Showers Plaza in front of City Hall, 401 N. Morton St.

MCEC's Explore Energy is a collaboration with Duke Energy and Vectren, and will feature various educational activities that showcase simple, cost-effective ways to save energy in your home. A highlight will be the Filet-A-Fridge demonstration, which will show attendees how old refrigerators are deconstructed as part of a responsible recycling program.

"It's an eye-opening demonstration," said Jacqui Bauer, the City of Bloomington's sustainability coordinator and MCEC partner. Bauer added that currently, and while funds last, local utilities are offering cash incentives to their customers to have old refrigerators recycled.

Both Duke Energy and Vectren will be on hand at Explore Energy to share information about incentives, like refrigerator recycling, and programs to encourage household energy efficiency.

In addition, Explore Energy will feature a play for children to learn about saving energy. There will also be a stationary bike race to demonstrate the energy requirements of lightbulbs and small appliances.

Special events will take place on the hour, with the Filet-A-Fridge demonstration occurring at 10:00 a.m., the "Treasure Trove of Conservation Cove" play at 11:00 a.m. and the stationary bike race at noon.
