Downtown Transit Center Named in Honor of Raymond L. McConn; Ceremony to be Held Friday, Oct. 2

Bloomington, Ind. - On Friday, Oct. 2, the Downtown Bloomington Transit Center will be dedicated to honor Raymond L. McConn, the former Chair of the Bloomington Transit Board Directors for his 33 years of service on the BT Board of Directors.

During McConn's time as chairman, McConn presided over expansion of the system to include new routes, service to new neighborhoods, construction of the 4th & Washington downtown bus terminal, construction of the BT/IU Grimes Lane Operations facility, construction of the new Downtown Transit Center at 3rd and Walnut, development of the partnership with Indiana University, introduction of hybrid buses and other new technologies and a ten-fold increase in transit ridership. McConn was first appointed by Mayor Frank McCloskey and served as Board Chairman under four (4) different Mayors during his tenure.

As the last serving charter member of the BT Board of Directors, Ray played an essential role in guiding and building an award winning transit system. BT was named as the Best Transit System in North America by the American Public Transportation Association in 2010. Bloomington Transit now has a fleet of 37 fuel efficient buses and ridership is at an all time high with more than 3.5 million passengers in 2014.

The Downtown Transit Center dedication will be held at the Downtown Transit Center, 301 S. Walnut St. starting at 10:30 a.m. in the multipurpose/conference room on the 1st floor. Parking is available at the 4th Street Garage. To RSVP, please email Brenda Underwood at bunder@bloomingtontransit.com.
