Volunteer Tutor Carson Bickley Receives February BRAVO Award

Bloomington, Ind.-The Bloomington Board of Park Commissioners, during their board meeting last week, recognized volunteer Carson Bickley for his exceptional service to the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department by presenting him with the February BRAVO Award.

The BRAVO Award is presented by the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department in recognition of the outstanding contributions of department volunteers.

Carson serves as a liaison between the Parks and Recreation Department and the Hutton Honors College-Indiana University. In the course of his volunteer work with the Banneker Afterschool Program at Fairview Elementary, Carson has recruited 84 individuals from among his peers to serve as individual tutors for students in the Banneker Afterschool program.

There are currently more than 50 students enrolled in the Banneker Afterschool Program, and thanks to Carson's efforts, many of the students receive one-on-one or small group tutoring in a variety of subjects, including math and English.

Not only does Carson recruit heavily for the Banneker Afterschool program, he also serves as a volunteer tutor himself.

Erik Pearson, Banneker Program Specialist and coordinator of the Banneker Afterschool Program, said, "To get all those university students together to embrace Banneker's Afterschool program mission, then recruit them to be a part of the program, takes a special person. Carson has played a crucial role in ensuring that Fairview students have a successful school experience and positive role models."
