City of Bloomington Utilities Issues Sanitary Sewer Overflow Advisories

Bloomington, Ind. - The City of Bloomington Utilities has issued sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) advisories for the following areas after SSOs were confirmed at each location.

  • 100 block West Grimes Lane
  • The intersection of East Hunter Avenue and South Eastside Drive
  • 1200/1300 blocks of South College Mall Road
  • 1900 block South Walnut Street
  • 4000 block West Broadway Avenue
  • 4000 block West Grand Avenue

CBU staff say volume and intensity of rainfall contributed to each SSO. The Bloomington/Monroe County area received nearly 2 ½ inches of rain between 12:00 a.m., Saturday, August 13, and 9:00 a.m., Sunday, August 14.

The process of determining the volume of flow generated from each sanitary sewer overflow is ongoing. The City of Bloomington Utilities followed the proper clean-up protocol in dealing with each SSO.

The City of Bloomington Utilities is committed to a more efficient and reliable wastewater collection and treatment system and reducing the number of sanitary sewer overflows is a major emphasis in that effort.

The City of Bloomington Utilities is also committed to transparency with respect to the citizens of this community. That includes issuing public advisories in the event a confirmed sanitary sewer overflow has occurred.
