Artists Invited to Submit Design Proposals for 2018 Bloomington Bicentennial Arbor Day Poster

Bloomington, Ind. - The Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department's urban forestry program is issuing a call for artist proposals for an Arbor Day poster to be released in April 2018 in celebration both of the City of Bloomington's 34th consecutive year of being named a Tree City USA and the City of Bloomington's Bicentennial. The poster will be a highly visible part of both the city's Bicentennial celebration, and recognize the city's commitment to a green and growing Tree City.

Poster Details:

  • The goal of the poster is to promote Arbor Day (celebrated on the last Friday in April in Indiana) and Bloomington's status as Indiana's first Tree City USA.
  • Themes to consider: Themes to consider: City of Bloomington's Bicentennial, Arbor Day, Tree City USA, trees of the past, present, and future
  • Final poster art should be 18" x 24" (either vertical or horizontal), and suitable for reproduction as a color print on paper.
  • The poster will be printed on quality paper stock and offered for sale to the Bloomington community.
  • There is no application fee.
  • Proposal deadline is 5 p.m. Wednesday, January 31, 2018.

Stipend:

Artist will receive a $500 stipend in addition to a framed, commemorative print of the Arbor Day poster and recognition as the selected artist.

Completion Date: Final poster artwork must be completed and submitted by March 1, 2018.

  • Illustrations of the proposed poster. Submissions must contain no more than 5 sketches or digital renderings of the proposed poster.

A description of the proposed work. Please include the following:

  • An artist statement describing artistic experience and interest in the project.
  • Poster medium (e.g. oil on canvas, computer-generated illustration, etc.)
  • A description of the concepts in the proposed Arbor Day poster, and how the elements relate to the city's Bicentennial and trees in the city of Bloomington.

Support Materials/Previous Work

  • Proposals may be accompanied by up to five images of previous work (optional)
  • Artist resume - max. two pages
  • Files should be submitted in a pdf format and will be acknowledged upon receipt.

Selection:

The artist will be selected by the City of Bloomington Bicentennial Planning Committee with input from the Bloomington Tree Commission.

Submissions must be received by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2018. Artists will be notified about the selection by Friday, February 16, 2018. Send electronic submissions to rameyj@bloomington.in.gov.
