City Announces Holiday Closings, Delays, Tree and Wreath Collection

Bloomington, Ind. - All City of Bloomington departments and offices will be closed on Monday, December 25, and Monday, January 1.

The Sanitation Department (solid waste and recycling removal) will operate on a one-day delay for the weeks beginning December 25 and January 1. Sanitation customers should place waste and recycling carts on the curb by 5:00 a.m. one day after regularly scheduled collection days December 25 through January 5.

Animal Care and Control will be closed on Sunday, December 24, Monday, December 25, and Monday, January 1. On Tuesday, December 26, and Friday, December 29, the Animal Shelter will close at 5:00 p.m. To request emergency care and animal control assistance during the closures, please call 812-339-1444. Staff will assist in dispatching an Animal Control Officer or scheduling an appointment.

City of Bloomington Utilities (CBU) customers experiencing an emergency during CBU’s scheduled closings can call 812-339-1444. Crews are on-call 24 hours a day.

The Sanitation Department will collect live Christmas trees and wreaths Tuesday, January 2, through Thursday, January 18.  Residents can place trees and wreaths at the curb on regular yard waste collection days. Ornaments, lights and all other decorations must be removed, and trees and wreaths may not be placed in plastic bags.

The Sanitation Department reminds residents that composting and mulching are the greenest ways both to reduce waste and create useful fertilizer for the yard or garden. Composting is natural, easy, requires almost no maintenance and can be done in any number of ways. For more information on composting, visit epa.gov/composting.
