City of Bloomington Utilities Issues Sanitary Sewer Overflow Advisory

Bloomington, Ind. — The City of Bloomington Utilities (CBU) has issued a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) advisory for the following area after an SSO was confirmed at this location:

  • East Hector Drive

CBU has concluded that this SSO was caused by a sewer surcharge, which is an overload of the sewer beyond its design capacity due to inflow and infiltration of water. The proper clean-up protocol was followed and the process of determining the volume of flow generated by this SSO is ongoing.

Anyone in the aforementioned area is advised to take precautions when coming into contact with untreated sewage that may have accumulated as a result of this overflow. Anyone who has come into direct contact with untreated sewage is advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly.

The City of Bloomington Utilities is committed to a more efficient and reliable wastewater collection and treatment system, and reducing the number of sanitary sewer overflows is a major emphasis in that effort.

The City of Bloomington Utilities also is committed to transparency with respect to the residents of this community. This includes issuing public advisories in the event a confirmed sanitary sewer overflow has occurred.
