Students to Reflect on “Reclaiming Our Time” for Black History Month Essay Contest

Bloomington, Ind - The City of Bloomington Black History Month Committee is seeking submissions from area students for the 2019 Black History Month Essay Contest. The theme for the 2019 Black History Month celebration is “Reclaiming Our Time,” prompting writers to reflect on the ways historic wrongs are being corrected, and the spaces that have been created to celebrate Black culture, history and community.

“As we close out our Bicentennial year, I invite our wonderfully engaged young people to reflect on our history,” said Mayor John Hamilton, “and particularly the history of the underrepresented members of our community.  This essay contest celebrates Bloomington’s Black culture and history through the voices of our city’s future leaders.”

First, second and third place prizes will be awarded in each of three categories: elementary (grades 4-6), middle (grades 7-8) and high school (grades 9-12). Homeschooled students are eligible to participate as well. First place essay winners will receive an iPad, second place winners will receive a $100 cash award, and third place winners will receive a $75 cash award.

All essays must be submitted on the Black History Month website at bloomington.in.gov/bhm, by January 18, 2019 at 5pm. Winners will be honored at a reception on February 21, 2019 as a part of the City’s Black History Month celebration.
