Bloomington Fire Department Launches “Heroes Helping Hoosiers” with Holiday Food Drive

Bloomington, Ind. – The Bloomington Fire Department (BFD) has launched a new series of community-serving events with a holiday food drive, taking place through December 16.  As the kickoff for “Heroes Helping Hoosiers,” the BFD is collecting non-perishable food items to be distributed to several community partners that help fight hunger.  Through its “Heroes Helping Hoosiers” series, the BFD is partnering with local organizations to provide resources and programming to benefit the community in ways that extend beyond the department’s official capacity.

Through December 16, the BFD’s five stations, as well as City Hall (401 North Morton Street) are serving as collection sites for canned goods or other non-perishable food items to be distributed to those in need through the following agencies and initiatives:  Monroe County United Ministries, Backpack Buddies (Community Kitchen), College Square Pantry, New Hope Family Shelters, and the Shalom Community Center. Contributions may be delivered to the following City locations:

  • City Hall - 401 North Morton

  • Station 1 - 300 East 4th Street

  • Station 2 - 209 South Fairfield Drive

  • Station 3 - 900 North Woodlawn Ave.

  • Station 4 - 2201 East 3rd Street

  • Station 5 - 1987 South Henderson St.

"While the holidays are a joyful time for many of us, some families and individuals in our community are unable to enjoy it because they are facing hunger,” said BFD Captain Max Litwin. “Through this food drive, we can share the spirit of the season with a few more of our neighbors."

The food drive will run through December 16, at which time the collection boxes will be picked up to ensure donations can be distributed in time for the holidays.
