BPD Employee Receives Positive COVID-19 Viral Test Result

Bloomington, Ind. - An employee of the Bloomington Police Department received a positive COVID-19 viral test result today.  Having self-isolated since first experiencing symptoms Saturday, October 3, the employee was tested Monday, October 5 and is taking sick leave to recover. This positive COVID diagnosis is the first known case among BPD staff.

The BPD has completed Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines to identify  co-workers with whom the employee may have interacted and prevent further viral transmission.  The employee, who is not a patrol officer, had minimal contact with the public during the 72 hours prior to the onset of symptoms.  Also per CDC guidelines, the facilities, vehicles, and equipment that the employee came into contact with have been decontaminated.

Today’s announcement marks the eleventh positive COVID-19 viral test result among City staff; the last employee to have received a positive result was a City of Bloomington Utilities (CBU) employee, which was reported on September 14. Previously, one City employee also reported a positive COVID-19 antibody test result and two employees of the municipal corporation that operates the Bloomington Transit system reported positive COVID-19 viral test results.

The City of Bloomington is committed to sharing information about how its operations and workforce are affected by this public health emergency, and will continue to provide updates about confirmed cases among staff while protecting employees’ privacy.
