City of Bloomington City-Wide Fiber Internet Project on Track for 2026 Completion
The City of Bloomington’s fiber initiative—a partnership with Meridiam/mStreet Fiber to bring high-speed internet to all of Bloomington—is more than 50 percent complete, putting the project on track for completion by the end of 2026. This marks a significant milestone in the initiative, one of the most substantial construction projects in the city’s history.
Project construction in public rights-of-way has been on pause since the beginning of the 2025 due to the business collapse of AEG, the project's primary construction contractor. Activity has picked up in recent weeks as mStreet Fiber has worked to remediate lingering AEG issues and bring nearly-complete zones online.
- Remediation of AEG Issues: Repairs in City rights-of-way are underway now. City Engineering has tracked more than 700 repairs to completion since September of 2024, with less than 50 items remaining. This work is expected to be finished by mid-November.
- Current Construction Areas: Work has begun on three nearly completed zones. Completion of this small build, which will bring 2,500 additional residential units onto the network, is expected by the end of November.
- New Construction Areas: Meridian/mStreet Fiber is reviewing bids for the completion of project construction. Vendor selection is expected by the end of the year, with construction resuming shortly thereafter.
Construction Information
To date, more than 200 miles of conduit and fiber have been installed across Bloomington.
Residents and businesses can track construction progress through the City’s Fiber Construction Progress Map. For more information on Bloomington’s fiber project and digital opportunity efforts, visit bloomington.in.gov/fiber.
Fiber construction involves work within public rights-of-way, meaning issues such as unmarked sewer laterals or sprinkler systems may occur.. Advancing Digital Opportunity
As part of the City and Meridiam’s project agreement, mStreet Fiber and GigabitNow have begun providing affordable high-speed internet at the Bloomington Housing Authority (BHA) Walnut Woods Apartments. This milestone ensures that all BHA apartment community residents, including those at previously connected Crestmont and Reverend Butler apartment communities, have access to high-quality fiber broadband service.
“The City is thrilled to see this provision from our agreement with Meridiam come to life, bringing affordable high-speed fiber Internet service to residents of Bloomington Housing Authority’s apartment community,” said Rick Dietz, Director of the City of Bloomington Information & Technology Services Department.
GigabitNow’s Fiber for All plan was recently recognized by the National Digital Inclusion Alliance with a "Best" ranking, making it one of only four plans in the country to earn the distinction. The program offers high-speed fiber internet access to income-eligible residents for only $9.99 per month and is available now to all BHA apartment residents.
About Digital Opportunity
