Mayors of Bloomington and Miami Mark Championship Matchup with Friendly Civic Wager

Ahead of the College Football National Championship matchup between the Indiana Hoosiers and the Miami Hurricanes, the mayors of Bloomington, Indiana, and Miami, Florida, are marking the moment with a gesture of civic camaraderie and a slice of friendly competition.

Mayor Kerry Thomson of Bloomington and Mayor Eileen Higgins of Miami connected ahead of Monday night’s championship game to wish one another well and celebrate the shared excitement unfolding in both communities. As part of the friendly exchange, the mayors agreed to a lighthearted wager: the mayor of the losing team’s city will send a signature pie to the winning city. Bloomington will send a classic Indiana sugar cream pie from Two Sticks Bakery, while Miami will send a Florida key lime pie from Fookem’s Fabulous Key Lime Pie.

“This is about community, connection, and enjoying a shared moment,” said Mayor Thomson. “It’s fun to celebrate something happening on a national stage while keeping the focus on the people in our cities who are watching, talking, and enjoying it together.”

“It is my pleasure to welcome the Indiana Hoosiers and their fans to South Florida for the College Football National Championship game," said Miami Mayor Eileen Higgins. "I look forward to a fun evening of friendly competition and to enjoying the famous Indiana sugar cream pie from Two Sticks Bakery! Go Canes!”

Both cities emphasized that the wager is ceremonial and community-focused, intended to highlight connection rather than competition.

The College Football Playoff National Championship takes place Monday, January 19.
