Mayor Thomson to Host June 16 Community Conversation on Kirkwood Avenue

In response to community interest and requests for additional public conversation, Mayor Kerry Thomson will host a community conversation on Tuesday, June 16, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall, 401 N. Morton Street about the future of Kirkwood Avenue.

The session follows the Bloomington Common Council’s recent vote on legislation related to the seasonal closure of Kirkwood Avenue. Mayor Thomson has not yet made a final decision on the legislation and is continuing to listen to feedback and hear perspectives.

Ordinance 2026-12 would require Kirkwood Avenue to be closed to automobile traffic every year from April 1 through Nov. 15, beginning in 2027. Council approved it 5–4 on June 10, 2026. The Mayor has 10 days after the ordinance is formally presented to her to either sign or veto it; Council could override a veto with six votes.

“Kirkwood belongs to the community and its future should be shaped with the community,” said Mayor Thomson. “I want to hear from residents, businesses, downtown workers, visitors, and anyone who cares about how this important corridor can best serve Bloomington.”

Participation is welcome both in person and online. The City will share Zoom access information ahead of the session at bloomington.in.gov and through the City’s official communication channels.

This session may also be viewed online through Community Access TV Services (CATS) at catstv.net.
