AmeriCorps Team to join Energy Challenge in Free Attic Insulation Program

Bloomington, Ind. - Supported by a grant from the Vectren Foundation, the Monroe County Energy Challenge (MCEC) will be working with an AmeriCorps team this spring to provide free attic insulation and air sealing for income-qualified homes in order to reduce energy costs and cut carbon emissions.

This spring, the Monroe County Energy Challenge will continue its successful attic insulation program with the help of eight AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) volunteers. The team will work alongside contractors and experienced Energy Challenge personnel to insulate between 25 and 30 attics at no cost to the resident.

"We are excited to continue our work with NCCC AmeriCorps to help reduce our city's carbon footprint and save homeowners money on utility bills," said Mayor John Hamilton.

In 2016, an AmeriCorps NCCC team helped air seal and insulate 22 local homes, which will save an estimated $84,000 over 10 years and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 46,000 lbs per year.

The project is funded by a $16,500 grant from the Vectren Foundation to make the insulation of attic space possible and convenient for families in the community. The program covers installation fees and materials and can save participants up to $600 per year on utility costs and $1,400 on contractor fees.

Residents of qualified homes must make 400% of the poverty level or less to participate in the program. This corresponds to a combined annual income under $56,070 for a family of two, or $85,050 for a family of four. Installation will take place between mid-March and the end of April, and interested homeowners or tenants should contact the Monroe County Energy Challenge by March 15th to schedule an initial assessment. Participation is based on financial need and current level of insulation.

The Monroe County Energy Challenge helps our community reduce energy use in order to improve quality of life, minimize environmental impact and save money. To find out if you qualify for the Attic Insulation Program, visit or call 812-349-3558.
