Be Compassionate Bloomington event celebrates Adopt-A-Dog Month

Bloomington, IN - Mayor Mark Kruzan has proclaimed October as Adopt-A-Dog Month, and the City of Bloomington is encouraging the community to Be Compassionate Bloomington and consider adoption of a loving shelter dog.

The City is promoting the month with half-priced adoptions throughout October. Fees, which cover a first round of vaccinations, a free visit to a local veterinary office, heartworm testing, microchip identification and spay/neuter surgery, will be $37.50 for dogs younger than 5 years old and $27.50 for those 5 years and up. Every adopter also will receive a gift bag of doggie goodies provided by the Monroe County Humane Association (MCHA).

"This year's campaign theme is 'Adopt a Shelter Dog, Be a Superhero,' and everyone should consider adopting a loyal sidekick for all of life's adventures," said Laurie Ringquist, Director of the City's Animal Shelter. "Adopting is a simple yet heroic deed, so I encourage everyone to visit the Shelter and save a life!"

In conjunction with Adopt-A-Dog Month, the City will be showing the Disney film "Bolt" at the Monroe County Public Library, 303 E. Kirkwood Avenue, on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 3 p.m. Adoptable Shelter dogs and cats will be on-hand in the Library atrium beginning at 2 p.m., and auditorium doors will open at 2:30 p.m. for seating. Admission to the event is free with a donation of dog or cat food, toys, treats or bedding for the animals at the Shelter.

"Bolt," an animated Disney film that is Rated-G, stars the voices of John Travolta and Miley Cyrus and was released in 2008. Both children and adults are encouraged to attend this very special event, and all donations collected will benefit the Shelter animals.

Adoptable animals can be visited at the City Animal Shelter, 3410 S. Walnut, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m., Tuesdays and Fridays from noon to 7 p.m., and Sundays from 1-4 p.m. Adoptable animals also can be seen on Saturday mornings at the Bloomington Community Farmers' Market, 401 N. Morton, from 9 a.m. to noon and on the Shelter web site at www.bloomington.in.gov/animalshelter.
