Bloomington Artist Seeks License Plates for Community Sculpture

Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington has announced that local artist Joe LaMantia is requesting donations of license plates for use as part of a community sculpture to be installed on the exterior of Garage Band (7th and Walnut), located in the Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD).

The project will include plates from all 50 states, and LaMantia has asked for those other than Indiana in an effort to help him collect them all. Donations can be left in the marked collection box in the Atrium at City Hall, 401 N. Morton Street, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

LaMantia will be fabricating a replica of a "Flying V" guitar, utilizing recycled traffic signage, car and bicycle parts and license plates. Entitled "Roadie," this sculpture will be a nod to Bloomington's rich musical tradition and commitment to sustainability and represents innovative uses of repurposed and new materials. LaMantia will begin fabrication of the guitar in the coming weeks, with installation set for late fall.

The sculpture is part of the new "Garage Culture" initiative for the City's three public garages to better increase their visibility, encourage their use and incorporate them into the visual landscape of BEAD.
