Bloomington, IN
-- Mayor Mark Kruzan has proclaimed October as Cancer Awareness Month in Bloomington. In an effort to raise funds and awareness leading up to October, the City of Bloomington Fire Department has begun selling pink t-shirts featuring the Department's logo and the cancer awareness ribbon. All proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go to the Olcott Center for Cancer Education.

"The department conducted a survey of our personnel, and over 85 percent have been affected by cancer either personally or in their immediate families," said Fire Chief Roger Kerr. "We feel this is a topic we want to help raise awareness for and in a small way help cancer survivors and their families. We are especially pleased that the money raised will stay in our community and support the fine work being done at the Olcott Center."

October is also Fire Prevention Month, and the Fire Department will be making more public appearances to raise awareness about both of these issues, including an open house during the Fourth Street Festival of Art and Crafts on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 4 and 5. During the open house, the Bloomington Pipes and Drums will be playing in front of fire headquarters on 4th Street, and Bloomington Metropolitan Firefighters Local 586 will host a food booth for breakfast and lunch, with proceeds going to several programs including Shop with a Firefighter.

T-shirts will be available for sale at Fire Headquarters, 300 East 4th Street, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and during the two-day festival. Sizes available include youth small, medium, large, adult small, medium, large and extra large, and feature the cancer awareness ribbon and the Fire Department logo. The shirts are $10 and can be purchased with cash or check.
